Veuve Cliquot Brut Rosé Non-Vintage Champagne.  Compared to their regular "yellow label" bottling, the rosé from Veuve exhibits much more refinement and elegance, with notions of cranberry, roses, watermelon, and red grapefruit.  Pretty pink/copper color, medium-bodied, and pleasing, with plenty of ripeness, but remains crisp thought the finish.  Drink now through 2015.  About $50.

Yering Station Sparkling Wine Yarrabank 2000 (Victoria).  Very golden in color, and still lively for a 12-year-old wine, this exhibits very yeasty aromas, along with candied citrus peel, honey, and blood orange.  Plenty of citrus flavors in the mouth (mostly white grapefruit), turning spicy on the finish.  Good depth for the price.  Drink right away.  About $18.

BenMarco Malbec 2009 (Mendoza).  Aged both in French and American oak, and blended with 8% Bonarda, this high-elevation Malbec is plush and international in style.  Reminiscent of sweet, ripe plums, figs, boysenberries, vanilla, dark spices, and charcoal.  Good velvety texture, with a creamy, dark fruit finish.  Drink now through 2015.  About $18.

Falesco Vitiano Bianco 2010 (Umbria).  Made from Verdicchio and Vermentino, and exhibiting a clear straw color, this solid, mid-weight Italian white is a good value.  Lemongrass and petroleum scents move to a palate of lemon oil and hints of passion fruit.  Finishes bright.  Drink now.  About $10.

Masi Campofiorin 2008 (Veronese).  Made using the appassimento and ripasso methods, this exhibits a dense purple color, along with scents of roses, tar, and black licorice.  Great depth, with a medium-body, and plenty of extraction.  Dried fruit stands out on the palate, along with the licorice.  Drink now through 2016.  About $20.

Norton Malbec Reserva 2008 (Mendoza).  Made from 30 year old vines, with 12 months French oak aging, this bridges the gap between the basic Norton Malbec offering and the more expensive Privada.  Good purity to the sweet vanilla, plum, cocoa powder, and coffee scents.  Made in a plush style, with notes of roses and dark fruit, then bacon on the finish.  Drink now through 2015.  About $16.

Marquis Philips Shiraz "9" 2005 (McLaren Vale).  Looks and smells like midnight, this is dark on top of dark, with intense melted licorice, tar, burning ember, and ground spice scents.  Extremely full-bodied, mouth-coating, and long in the mouth.  Very ripe blueberry and blackberry, along with incense and meat flavors.  Weighs in at a whopping 16.5% alcohol.  Plenty of baby fat still, but very drinkable now, and will last though 2020.  About $40.

Columbia Crest Merlot 2009 (Horse Heaven Hills).  Loaded with the pure essence of plum and black cherry, with hints of smoke and eucalyptus, this exhibits great focus for the price, with a pleasant, soft palate impression.  A clear step up from the regular Columbia Valley bottling, and remains an excellent value.  Drink now through 2015.  About $15.

Bodegas Escorihuela Gascon Malbec 2010 (Mendoza).  Deep red/purple, with an expressive nose of blue/black berries, freshly brewed coffee, figs, and charcoal.  Pleasant, easy texture, with no hard edges.  Mocha on the finish.  A solid value for early drinking.  About $11.

Bellum Providencia 2003 (Yecla).  Raw blood, Asian spices, and hoisin sauce scents are evident on this 100% old vine Monestrell.  Tasted for the second time (after five years of aging), this formerly impenetrable, brooding Spanish red now offers more balance to the licorice, roasted meat, wild berry, smoke, briar, and blueberry flavors.  Still has plenty of power in reserve.  Drink now through 2016.

K Vintners Syrah Milbrandt Wahluke Slope 2006 (Columbia Valley).  Opaque purple/red, with a beautiful, intense nose that shows blackberries, campfire, melted licorice, asphalt, cloves, and herbs.  Very full-bodied, rich and expansive in mouth, with excellent harmony to the acidity, chocolate, licorice, and dark fruit notes.  Coffee grounds on the long finish.  An early candidate for top 10 of the year.  Irresistible now, but will hold for at least another 6 years.  About $50.

Potel Aviron Julienas Vieilles Vignes 2009.  A dark nose, with ink, blackberries, and cola.  Impressive depth, and admirable intensity, featuring wild berries, smoke, raspberries, and roses.  Lively finish balances out the dark characteristics.  Great now, but will last through 2016.  About $20.

Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve 1996 (Napa Valley).  Fantastic purity and focus to the ripe cherry, cassis, and plum scents, with hints of vanilla and smoke.  Medium-bodied, elegant, but full of flavor intensity, with a very long, caressing finish.  Toffee, caramel, and bell pepper notes to go with the dark fruit.  Beautiful texture.  Not the greatest B.P.R., but still outstanding.  Mature, but will last for a few more years.  About $100.

Buitenverwachting Sauvignon Blanc Beyond 2010 (Coastal Region, South Africa).  Intense grass, fresh herb, jalapeño pepper, and tart lime notes, with nearly searing acidity.  Not at all a soft, but is interesting as a change of pace, and shows some chalk/pepper on the finish.  Drink now.  About $11.

Pierre Sparr Cremant d'Alsace Reserve Non-Vintage.  Made from 90% Pinot Blanc with 10% Pinot Noir, this is strikingly clear, with notions of white grapefruit and white flowers on the nose.  A bright, lively style that delivers tart citrus flavors on an open frame.  Not very complex, but is good for an inexpensive aperitif.  About $15.

Scharffenberger Brut Rosé Non-Vintage (Mendocino County).  Beautiful copper/peach color, with cranberries, lemons, brioche, and apples on the nose.  Delicious, and very flavorful, without being over the top, this manages to stay lively on top of a medium-bodied texture.  Closes with a hint of spice.  Drink now.  A bargain at about $22.

Lewelling Cabernet Sauvignon Wight Vineyard 2007 (Napa Valley).  An exclusive, almost mailing list only production, the Wight Vineyard designated bottling of this small winery is a full-throttle, super-rich example of Cabernet.  Opaque purple/red, and smelling of concentrated pure cassis, with vanilla and white flowers.  Very full-bodied, powerful and intense, this sticks to the palate with youthful dark cherry, charcoal, and licorice flavors.  15.8% alcohol.  Best to wait 3 years, and will drink well for at least another decade.  Purchased for about $75, but might be found on the open market for about $150.
